My name is Matt Smeltzer. Some of you may have happened upon this site from Twitter, Google, or perhaps you've read my short story, Just Desserts. No matter what brings you in, I'm happy you are here!
Allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I come from a small town in Pennsylvania where I live with my fiance and our nephew. We'll be getting married in a few before I know it. The big day is set for April 26, 2019! We have been together for almost 9 years now. I am a social worker by day, writer by night.
Writing has been my passion since I was nine years old. I used to sit in my mother's sewing shop while she worked and would write lyrics. Were they great? That'd be a firm no, but it was the kickoff to my love of writing. I created my very first story in seventh grade. Three years later, I would write a humorous short story called Just Desserts with my writing mentor, Sherry Walters. It was not until after her death that I thought I should share this work with the world. It's a great way to keep her memory and spirit alive. It also has inspired me to write a full length followup to Just Desserts in the near future.
What really pulled me back into writing was The Pantsuit Nation group on Facebook. A friend of mine encouraged me to share my personal story of coming out and being persecuted by my church as the youth leader. The outpouring of love and support of perfect strangers warmed my heart, but their overall consensus that I needed to chronicle this journey into a book served as my call to action. They said that it could serve to help so many people, given my positive approach to what occurred and the way I used it to strengthen me where it could have torn me down. I have been working since 2017 to put my experiences down on paper. The second draft is completed and out to my editor. I shoot the official cover artwork and photography to accompany the book this week and I could not be more excited to share it with the world. Moreso, I hope that this will inspire people and help change the lives of struggling LGBT kids and adults alike.
If you haven't had a chance to do so, check out Just Desserts on Amazon as we await the official release of Coming Out & Coming Through. It's currently free to read for Kindle Unlimited subscribers!
With love, Matt
